MICHAEL EKEMEZIE: Swiss Govt Launches Probe Into Nigerian’s Death in Police Custody

Switzerland’s government has formally responded to growing demands for answers following the tragic death of 27-year-old Nigerian national, Michael Ekemezie, who reportedly died after an encounter with police officers in Lausanne, Switzerland, on May 25, 2025.

Nigerian human rights lawyer and activist, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, announced on Wednesday that the Embassy of Switzerland in Nigeria has acknowledged receipt of a petition filed on May 30, 2025, calling for an immediate and transparent investigation into the incident.

In a letter dated June 4 and signed by Chargé d’Affaires Mr. Siamak Rouhani, the Swiss Embassy confirmed that a formal investigation has been launched by the competent Cantonal Prosecutor’s Office. However, the Embassy declined to provide additional information, citing Switzerland’s strict data protection laws and constitutional separation of powers.

“We take note of this official acknowledgment and the commencement of investigative proceedings,” said Sir Ejiofor in a statement shared with the press. “However, we remain gravely concerned about the continued silence and lack of transparency surrounding the exact circumstances of Mr. Ekemezie’s death.”

The case has sparked outrage across Nigeria and beyond, drawing attention to issues of racial profiling, police brutality, and the treatment of Africans abroad. Activists, civil society organizations, and members of the Nigerian diaspora are calling for justice, not only for Michael Ekemezie, but for all victims of systemic abuse.

“This is not merely a legal issue — it is a human tragedy,” Ejiofor added. “A young life has been cut short under distressing and suspicious conditions in the custody of a country that proclaims itself a bastion of human rights and the rule of law.”

The call for justice has been amplified on social media with hashtags like #JusticeForMichaelEkemezie, #EndPoliceBrutality, and #NigerianLivesMatter trending, as public demand intensifies for answers, accountability, and reform.

Ejiofor emphasized that the Swiss government must not allow procedural barriers to obscure justice. “We urge Swiss authorities to cooperate fully with the Nigerian government and the legal representatives of Michael’s family. Every diplomatic and legal avenue must be exhausted to uncover the truth. Justice must not be delayed — and it must never be denied.”

He concluded with a pointed reminder to both Switzerland and the international community: “Michael Ekemezie’s life mattered. His story must not be silenced. Switzerland’s global reputation for justice and human dignity is now on trial.”

Ejiofor noted that as the investigation proceeds, eyes around the world remain fixed on Switzerland. The family of Michael Ekemezie and the nation of Nigeria, continue to wait.
