The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed Vianna Bakery in Awka, Anambra State, citing longstanding non-compliance with food safety and quality standards.
The enforcement action was led by Engineer Francisca Obialor, Zonal Coordinator of the FCCPC for the South East, which covers Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi States. She said the closure followed repeated and ignored attempts by the Commission to engage the bakery’s management on serious regulatory concerns dating back to 2022.
“Vianna Bakery has consistently refused to respond to official communications, including invitations, reminders, and formal summons from the FCCPC,” Engr. Obialor told journalists during the enforcement exercise. “This action became necessary after years of non-compliance. We cannot continue to allow a business to operate in ways that could endanger consumers.”
She stressed that consumer protection remains the Commission’s top priority, noting that Vianna Bakery’s operations posed a potential risk to public health. According to her, the bakery’s refusal to engage with regulators or acknowledge official correspondence left the FCCPC with no choice but to shut down the facility as a last resort.
“The responsibility for this closure lies squarely with the management of Vianna Bakery, who repeatedly failed to cooperate,” she said. “We are sending a clear message that businesses must adhere to established standards or face the consequences.”
On the path to reopening, Engr. Obialor explained that the bakery must report to the FCCPC’s head office in Abuja to receive and implement regulatory directives. Only upon full compliance will the bakery be allowed to resume operations.
All efforts by our correspondent to reach Vianna Bakery’s Managing Director for comments were unsuccessful as calls went unanswered.
