Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi has challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for the ₦15.8 trillion reportedly saved from fuel subsidy removal and more than $100 billion in borrowings, insisting that Nigerians deserve transparency over the utilisation of public funds.

Obi made the demand while commending Tinubu for spending a night in Akwa Ibom State, urging the President to use his visits across the country to engage citizens and explain his administration’s performance.

In a statement titled “Good Day, Mr President: Nigerians Deserve Accountability,” Obi expressed hope that the President’s visit would encourage him to travel to the remaining 33 states of the federation and interact more closely with Nigerians.

“I congratulate you on spending a night in one of Nigeria’s states outside Lagos and Abuja. I hope you enjoyed the warmth, hospitality and delicious cuisine of Akwa Ibom,” Obi stated.

He said Tinubu should take advantage of such visits to explain how the government had utilised resources generated through subsidy removal, borrowing, taxation and increased revenues.

Obi specifically called for an account of the ₦15.8 trillion saved from fuel subsidy removal, more than $100 billion borrowed by the government, increased tax revenues and additional government earnings that the administration reportedly said had exceeded its target last year.

The former Anambra State governor stressed that Nigerians deserved to know the tangible benefits of these resources, particularly in poverty reduction, education, healthcare, electricity and security.

“Nigerians deserve to know how many people have been pulled out of poverty within this period, how many out-of-school children have been returned to school, and how many functional primary healthcare centres you have built,” he said.

Obi also questioned the administration’s progress in improving electricity supply, recalling Tinubu’s promise that Nigerians should not vote for him if he failed to fix power.

He further demanded an explanation of the government’s efforts to address insecurity, noting that Nigeria remains among the countries severely affected by terrorism.

“Mr President, Nigerians deserve answers. They deserve to know what has been done with the resources entrusted to your government,” Obi declared.

He maintained that accountability, transparency and measurable improvements in citizens’ welfare should form the foundation of governance.

According to him, public resources must translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians rather than remain figures in government revenue and expenditure reports.

“The New Nigeria we want to build will be based on accountability, transparency, and the physical, measurable impact of our public resources on the lives of citizens,” Obi stated.

He concluded by reiterating his optimism about the country’s future, saying, “A new Nigeria is possible.”
