The Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Henry C. Ndukuba, has directed the Archbishop of the Province of the Niger and Bishop of the Diocese of Awka, Most Rev. Alexander C. Ibezim, to proceed on six months’ leave amid investigations into allegations and recent developments in the diocese.

In a letter dated October 13, 2026, Ndukuba announced the appointment of the Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ezeofor, as Supervising Bishop of Awka Diocese and Coordinating Bishop of the Province of the Niger during Ibezim’s absence.

The Primate said the decision followed concerns arising from recent developments in the diocese and the consideration of a report submitted by a visitation team led by the Dean of the Church of Nigeria.

He explained that the leave was an administrative measure intended to facilitate a fair investigation and restore peace within the diocese, clarifying that it did not constitute a disciplinary sanction.

During the period, Ibezim is prohibited from officiating at activities of the Church of Nigeria, the Province of the Niger and the Diocese of Awka. He was also directed to hand over his responsibilities to Ezeofor immediately.

The development comes amid allegations that Ibezim authorised the sale of church lands reportedly valued at more than ₦2 billion without approval.

The controversy also involved a petition submitted to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on behalf of Echezona Onuigbo, a member of St. Faith Cathedral, Awka, alleging improprieties in the diocese.

Anambra State High Court had previously issued an order restraining the proposed arrest of the archbishop in connection with the matter.

The Primate’s letter did not specify the allegations under investigation or disclose the findings of the visitation team. The claims surrounding the land transactions remain allegations and should not be treated as established wrongdoing.
