Flood Tragedy: 9 Rescued, One Child Missing Along Nibo–Isiagu Road

Nine people, including seven schoolchildren and two adults, have been rescued following a flood incident along the Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the rescue on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, stating that its Safe School Operatives worked with community members to evacuate those trapped in the flood. One child remains missing, with search operations ongoing.

According to Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, the rescue team mobilised after receiving information about the incident and moved the survivors to safety.

The statement said, “One additional child involved in the incident is still unaccounted for,” adding that sustained search and rescue operations had been activated in collaboration with community members and relevant stakeholders.

The Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Ama, directed that the search be sustained and expanded, while appealing to residents to provide information that could help locate the missing child.

Meanwhile, an account from Isiagu community members claimed that youths rescued 16 people after floodwaters overtook a shuttle bus, tricycle and school bus along the route. The account also reported that one person was missing after reportedly falling from a tricycle.

The discrepancy between the community account and the police-confirmed rescue figure has not been resolved. The police account confirms nine people rescued and one child missing.

The Police Command urged parents, guardians, school authorities and motorists to exercise extreme caution around flooded roads and waterways during heavy rainfall.
