The Majority Leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Engr. Ikenna Ofordeme, has called on the Anambra State Pilgrim Affairs Office to ensure transparency, thorough screening of intending pilgrims and proper visa clearance to guarantee the success of the state’s Christian pilgrimage programme.

Ofordeme also advocated government subsidies to make the programme more accessible to residents, particularly those who may be unable to afford the cost of pilgrimage.

The lawmaker, who represents Ekwusigo Constituency, made the call when the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Pilgrim Affairs, Hon. Barr. Odira Ezeh, paid him a courtesy visit alongside his team as part of ongoing engagements with strategic stakeholders.

He commended Governor Soludo for establishing a dedicated Pilgrim Affairs Office, describing the initiative as a demonstration of the administration’s recognition of religion and its commitment to providing opportunities for Ndi Anambra to deepen their Christian faith.

According to Ofordeme, the initiative reflects a deliberate leadership decision to prioritize programmes capable of positively impacting the lives of residents.

He noted that pilgrimage had not received similar attention during the governor’s first term, adding that the establishment of the office represents a renewed commitment to the spiritual development of the people.

The Majority Leader stressed that pilgrimage should not merely be about travelling abroad and returning with religious titles, but should produce genuine spiritual transformation and meaningful testimonies.

He urged the state government to invest adequately in the programme to ensure that its benefits extend beyond individual participants to the wider society.

Ofordeme, however, emphasized the importance of proper documentation, thorough screening and verification of intending pilgrims before registration is concluded.

He warned that applicants who purchase registration forms without meeting immigration requirements or obtaining the necessary visas could eventually blame the government and accuse the Pilgrim Affairs Office of misleading them.

The lawmaker therefore urged the office to establish robust security and immigration verification procedures to ensure that only qualified applicants are processed.

He also called for clear communication of registration procedures, travel conditions and eligibility requirements from the point of application.

According to him, transparency at every stage would prevent unnecessary disappointment, protect the credibility of the programme and strengthen public confidence in the government.

Ofordeme further noted that residents would naturally expect financial assistance from government because the initiative was state-driven.

He maintained that subsidies would help reduce the financial burden on participants and enable more residents, especially those from less privileged backgrounds, to benefit from the programme.

Earlier, Ezeh explained that the visit was aimed at strengthening partnerships with strategic stakeholders and promoting the spiritual, social and developmental objectives of the Soludo administration.

He commended Ofordeme for his legislative leadership and effective representation, while acknowledging the commitment of Governor Soludo and his Deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, to initiatives promoting the spiritual, moral, social and economic development of Ndi Anambra.

Ezeh disclosed that the Deputy Governor had developed initiatives to expand the opportunities associated with Christian pilgrimage, including a proposed Pilgrimage Exchange Programme.

He explained that the programme would promote religious tourism, attract visitors to Anambra, create employment opportunities and boost the state’s internally generated revenue.

The Pilgrim Affairs boss also highlighted the proposed Pilgrimage Lottery Programme, which is expected to widen access to pilgrimage opportunities while ensuring fairness, transparency and credibility in the selection of beneficiaries.

He further disclosed that preparations were ongoing for the Anambra State Christian Pilgrims Summit, which would educate residents on the theme, “Why Pilgrimage?” by highlighting its spiritual significance, purpose and benefits to individuals and society.

According to Ezeh, the summit would provide a platform for collaboration among the state government, church leaders, market leaders, professional bodies and other stakeholders in advancing the spiritual and developmental interests of Ndi Anambra.

He called on Ofordeme and the Anambra State House of Assembly to partner with the Pilgrim Affairs Office in creating awareness and encouraging eligible residents of his constituency to participate in the programme.

Ezeh also appealed to the lawmaker to identify opportunities to support deserving constituents who wish to embark on pilgrimage but lack the financial resources.

He announced that the 2026 Christian Pilgrimage Registration Forms were currently on sale, urging interested residents to visit the Anambra State Pilgrim Affairs Office for registration, information and guidance on the necessary requirements.

The visit underscored the importance of collaboration between the executive and legislative arms of government in advancing Anambra’s Christian pilgrimage initiative.

Both parties emphasized that transparency, accountability, proper planning and accessibility would be critical to ensuring that the programme delivers meaningful spiritual and social benefits to Ndi Anambra under the Soludo administration.
