Anambra Police, Others Intensify Rescue Efforts at Collapsed Three-Storey Lodge Site

OKO, Anambra State — A desperate rescue operation is underway after a three-storey building collapsed late Sunday night in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, leaving an unknown number of occupants trapped beneath the rubble.

The building, identified as Elite Five Star Lodge, is located beside Tonimas Filling Station in the Amokpala area of Oko. The collapse, which occurred on the night of Sunday, July 26, 2026, triggered an emergency response involving the Anambra State Police-led Joint Security Team, the Anambra State Fire Service, and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, security operatives responded immediately after receiving a distress call, secured the scene, and launched coordinated rescue efforts.

«”On receipt of the distress report, the Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, immediately mobilised to the scene, secured the area to prevent further danger, and coordinated rescue efforts,” Ikenga said.»

Emergency responders have already rescued several injured victims from the debris and transported them to a hospital in Oko, where they are receiving medical treatment. However, authorities say rescue operations are still ongoing, as officials continue searching for other victims who may remain trapped beneath the collapsed structure.

The Police noted that the exact number of casualties or affected persons is yet to be confirmed.

“Rescue operations are ongoing to reach other persons who may still be trapped, and the number of casualties or affected persons cannot yet be confirmed,” the statement added.

Authorities have appealed to residents and members of the public to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified reports, and keep away from the scene to allow emergency personnel unhindered access to carry out rescue operations effectively.
