“If You Were Igbo, I Would Have Detained You” — Fada Angelo Chidi Reacts to Viral Police Video, Urges Igbos to Embrace Their Identity

A viral video allegedly showing a police officer making an ethnic remark during a stop has sparked fresh conversations about ethnic profiling in Nigeria, with Catholic Priest, Fada Angelo Chidi Unegbu delivering a passionate response that is generating widespread reactions online.

Reacting to the clip, Fada Angelo expressed deep concern over what he described as discrimination against Igbos, arguing that such experiences have forced many to distance themselves from their ethnic identity.

According to him, the police officer allegedly checked a man’s identification, including his surname and local government of origin, before saying:

“If you were Igbo, I would have detained you.”

The authenticity and full context of the viral video have not been independently verified.

In his reaction, Fada Angelo wrote:

“Do you now realize why many Ndigbo proudly deny their identity? Nigeria has become a weapon fashioned against them.”

He further claimed that increasing numbers of Igbos are changing their surnames to English names or concealing their state of origin to avoid discrimination.

Addressing fellow Igbos, he urged them not to abandon their heritage despite perceived persecution.

“Never change your name, your state of origin, or deny your identity because of persecution. That is exactly what they want you to do. Your greatest weapon is your unity.”

The cleric maintained that being Igbo is not a crime and encouraged people to remain proud of their roots.

“Remain Igbo. Be proud of it. You did not commit any crime by being Igbo. Your ancestors did not commit any crime by defending themselves when war was brought to them.”

Looking ahead, he expressed hope for a more united and just Nigeria.

“One day, the sun will rise to dispel this darkness of hatred, oppression, and subjugation. One day, we shall live in a country we can proudly call home.”

Fada Angelo also referenced the continued detention of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing it as part of his broader concerns about the treatment of the Igbo people. That assertion reflects his personal opinion and remains a subject of political and legal debate.
