A humanitarian intervention has been activated for Ifechukwu, a young girl receiving treatment for Advanced HIV Disease (AHD) at Regina Caeli Hospital, Awka, following swift action by the Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Nonye Soludo, after her attention was drawn to the case.
The intervention followed a distress report on the child’s worsening health condition, which was escalated to Mrs. Soludo through the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA). She immediately directed support under her Healthy Living Initiative, mobilising resources for the child’s treatment and welfare.
Officials said the First Lady’s response underscores her sustained commitment to vulnerable groups in the state, particularly children and families affected by serious health challenges, as part of broader public health and social welfare efforts.
Following her directive, a delegation drawn from Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, ANSACA, the Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN), the Association of Women Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (ASWHAN), civil society organisations, and other partners visited the patient at the hospital.
During the visit, the team provided food items, medical supplies and financial assistance to support the child’s nutrition, medication and ongoing treatment. Health workers at Regina Caeli Hospital reportedly observed early signs of improvement in the patient’s condition following the intervention.
Dr. Nkem Okeke, Executive Director of ANSACA, said the First Lady’s prompt response demonstrated the importance of rapid humanitarian action in critical health emergencies, adding that the support would be sustained through continued monitoring and psychosocial care for the child.
He also urged stronger community vigilance and timely reporting of severe health cases, noting that early intervention remains vital in improving outcomes for children living with Advanced HIV Disease.
Authorities reiterated calls for residents to know their HIV status and seek early treatment, stressing that prevention, early detection and continuous care are key to reducing complications and transmission in Anambra State.
