A retired Anglican cleric, Ven Clement Mgbemena has urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to consider upgrading Merchants of Light School, Oba to a smart school to further deepen grassroots education in the Old Idemili region of the state.

Mgbemena, an alumnus of the school and Director of Archives and Antiquities, Anglican Diocese of Awka made the call on Tuesday during the 80th Founder’s Day/2026 Biennial Convention of the Old Boys Association Worldwide.

He expressed worry over the poor state of infrastructure in the school, stressing that government’s intervention was urgently needed to address the anomaly.

“I call on the state government through the Commissioner of Education to upgrade MOLS to the status of a smart secondary school being the third secondary school from the area.

“Upgrading the school to a smart school will help avail residents of the Old Idemili region the benefits of such modern educational facility,” he added.

The cleric further urged the alumni to shine the light wherever they find themselves, describing the convention as a reminder that the light they bore must not be extinguished

“We must not allow our light to go dim despite challenges and chaos of the present day society.

“We must shine inwardly, outwardly, externally and emulate the founder’s enduring legacies of love, simplicity, selflessness, devotion and doggedness.

“We must give back through mentorship and support so that the light they received can be kept aglow,” he added.
