In a passionate plea for justice and safety, Hon. Nkechi Ogbuefi, the Deputy Minority Leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly and member representing Anaocha Constituency 1, has raised her voice against the alarming incident of violence targeting female corps members, echoing the urgent need for protective measures in the community.

During a vibrant plenary session on August 19, 2025, Ogbuefi addressed her fellow lawmakers, deeply affected by a harrowing video that surfaced showing the brutal assault of a female corps member by security operatives in Oba. The video, which has since gone viral, has ignited widespread outrage and highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by young women in service roles.

“Today, I stand here in this esteemed chamber to unequivocally condemn the atrocious actions taken by the operatives of the security group known as ‘UDOGACHI,’ who viciously attacked and stripped a female corps member at Oba,” Ogbuefi stated with palpable intensity. Her words painted a vivid picture of the deplorable treatment the young woman endured, which she labeled as “barbaric,” “inhumane,” and “wholly unacceptable.”

The Deputy Minority Leader’s passionate address resonated with the assembly, as she stressed, “In a progressive state like Anambra, populated by educated and enlightened citizens, such acts are intolerable. This incident marks a grave violation of human rights and a direct affront to the dignity of our women.”

Advocating for immediate action, Ogbuefi implored the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, the State Commissioner of Police, and other pertinent authorities to ensure the perpetrators are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Her call to action was not just a reaction to a single incident but a rallying cry against systemic issues.

“This reprehensible behavior not only contravenes the principles of justice but also undermines our collective efforts against gender-based violence and other forms of abuse—issues that our administration and civil society organizations continue to champion,” she asserted passionately.

As the discussions unfolded in the assembly, it became evident that the community’s call for justice is growing louder. The resilience of women like the assaulted corps member fuels the fight for safety and respect, and with leaders like Hon. Nkechi Ogbuefi standing on the frontlines, there is hope for a future where all members of society can serve and thrive without fear.
