Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra state has expressed preparedness to partner with Ministries, Department and Agencies in the state to ensure safety of road users and minimal crashes across the state.
Sector Commander, Joyce Alexander who disclosed this on Tuesday during a visit to the Head of Service, Theodora Igwegbe identified ignorance and disobedience to traffic rules as major causes of road crashes in the state.
She said the meeting was to leverage on strategic position of the Head of Service to mobilize workers under her for aggressive enlightenment and reorientation to ensure compliance to traffic regulations.
She said, “I’ve been meeting with other MDAs. But today we decided to meet with you because we feel visiting you will further get the buy-in of workers in state to the activities of FRSC.
“As a lead agency of traffic management in Nigeria, our mandate is to ensure safety of traffic users which we do through collaborations and public enlightenment.
“Although we’re virtually in every local government areas of the state, but we can’t be everywhere. That’s why we partner with states and encourage them to have their own traffic agencies.
“As the arrow head of all ministries in the state, getting you, for us makes it easier to get almost all other MDAs.
“We’ve observed that apart from those ignorant of traffic rules, those who know the rules, flaunt them with impunity because they’re in Nigeria.
“Very glaring among them is giving way to traffic by the left especially at roundabouts. This is a global road traffic regulation, but many don’t know it which unfortunately are causes of most crashes.
“We want to see if there’s any way we can leverage on your position and get staff under your ministry to have a reorientation workshop for them.
“We also want your staff to assist us on cases of emergency by alerting us through our 122 toll free number, regardless of the time of the day.”
Responding, HoS assured closer collaboration with the FRSC towards achieving it’s mandate, expressing optimism of positive results.
“I know that sensitization matters a lot and safety and lives of road users is important to Mr Governor and all of us. We’ll also assist you through whistle blowing policy of “if you see something, say something.”
“I’m optimistic the partnership is going to yeild fruitful results to the benefits of the people of the state. I’ll follow up the training request to ensure its speedy approval and implementation,” she added.
