Awka zone wins 2025 Anambra Under-12 Sports Competition, beating Onitsha, Aguata

Awka Educational Zone has emerged the overall champions in the 2025 State Schools Sports Finals of Under-12 boys and girls competition.

The zone came top with 9 Gold, 11 Silver and 6 Bronze medals, while Onitsha Zone took the second position with 5 Gold, 6 Silver and 2 Bronze, and Aguata Zone came third with 5 Gold, and 1 Silver.

The competition was organised by a collaboration of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) under the 2021 SUBEB/UBEC Intervention Sports Competition.

The event which took place at Awka City Stadium, featured both track, field and indoor events, such as football, relay races, ncho, scrabble, and chess aimed at providing a veritable platform for a total development of learners from the 21 Local Government Areas of the State with a view to promote sporting spirit among them.

Speaking during the occasion, Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh described sports as one of the strongest domains of learning and extolled Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his vision and targeted drive towards revitalising all sectors of the economy which is steadily projecting Anambra on the global map.

Executive Chairman, ASUBEB, Awka, Dr. Vera Nkiru Nwadinobi described the Finals as a celebration of teamwork, resilience and youthful energy which are in line with Mr. Governor’s vision of raising well-rounded children that are intellectually sound, morally upright and physically strong.

“I want to appreciate Mr Governor’s bold vision for ‘One Government and One Agenda’, which has continued to empower every sector including the basic education.

“I also commend UBEC for its continued collaboration and support which made the sporting intervention possible”, she said.

Assuring commitment of ASUBEB and UBEC in providing all round education for learners in the State, Nwadinobi noted that the ASUBEB/UBEC Intervention Sports Competition was an opportunity to shop for budding talents in sports.

Chairman, State Sports Commission, Hon. Patrick Onyedum appreciated the ASUBEB leadership for implementing government’s vision and called for discipline and spirit of sportsmanship among the athletes in the competition.

High point of the event was the decoration of the winners of the various categories with their medals.
