The Commissioner made the disclosure after a recent appearance before the State House of Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee.

Fielding questions with newsmen after the session, Hon. Onyeka disclosed that the Soludo-led Administration was focusing on formulating policies that will address these housing needs leffectively.

Onyeka, said that the state government was intent on ending the housing crisis by implementing a comprehensive housing policy.

“We are here as a ministry to do one of those constitutionally spelt out duties that every ministry must do, to appear before the Public Accounts Committee of the House of Assembly of the State. And, the essence of this is to make sure that the taxpayers money is being spent in the most judicious and prudent manner”, he said.

The issue of housing deficit has become increasingly pressing in Anambra State, where rapid urbanization and population growth have exacerbated the problem.

As of 2023, the state recorded a housing deficit of approximately 600,000 units, a figure that has continued to rise due to limited affordable housing options and increasing migration of people to urban centers.

This has made housing accessibility a paramount concern for the government, particularly for civil servants and low-income families who struggle to find adequate living spaces.

Hon. Onyeka emphasized that government’s efforts not only aim to provide shelter but also to foster community development and improve the overall quality of life for Anambrarians.
