The Ebonyi Unity Forum, Anambra State, has condemned the reported killings of a young lady from Uga and an 18-year-old boy in separate incidents in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, calling on security agencies to ensure that justice is served.

The forum described the incidents as disturbing and unacceptable, stressing that no disagreement, relationship dispute or family misunderstanding could justify the unlawful taking of human life.

The two incidents involved Miss Mmesoma, a young lady from Uga who was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, identified as Ofoke Emmanuel Chima, and an 18-year-old boy at Ori-Eri, who was reportedly killed by his father, Mr John Ezeh, an indigene of Ebonyi State.

In a statement signed by the President-General of the forum, Chief Moses Chukwuma Ofoke, CEO of Mosfrank International, and its Secretary, Comrade Aloke Nnabuike Stanley, the group called for comprehensive, impartial and transparent investigations into both incidents.

“The Forum condemns in the strongest possible terms the reported killings in Aguata Local Government Area,” the statement read.

“We maintain that no disagreement, provocation, relationship dispute or family misunderstanding can justify the unlawful taking of another person’s life.

“Human life is sacred, and disputes must be resolved through peaceful, lawful and responsible means rather than violence.”

Forum Calls for Thorough Police Investigation

The group urged the Anambra State Police Command, the State Criminal Investigation Department (State CID) and other relevant security agencies to establish the circumstances surrounding the two deaths and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.

According to the forum, a thorough investigation is essential to establish the facts, uphold the rule of law and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“The Forum believes that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done,” the statement added.

It also called on the authorities to handle the cases diligently and professionally, stressing that accountability was necessary to reassure the affected families and the wider public.

The forum expressed solidarity with the bereaved families, particularly the family of the late Mmesoma and the mother and immediate relatives of the 18-year-old boy.

It prayed for comfort and strength for the grieving families, acknowledging the emotional trauma associated with losing loved ones under such tragic circumstances.

Warns Against Retaliation, Communal Tension

Amid concerns that the incidents could trigger tension within the affected communities, the forum appealed to residents of Uga, Ori-Eri and other parts of Anambra State to remain calm and allow the relevant authorities to conduct their investigations.

It specifically cautioned against retaliatory attacks, the circulation of unverified information, inflammatory comments and other actions capable of escalating tensions.

“No individual or group should take the law into their own hands,” the statement warned.

The forum also called on traditional rulers, community leaders, youth organisations and other stakeholders to work together to preserve peace and ensure that the incidents do not undermine the cordial relationship between Ebonyi indigenes and their host communities.

It emphasised that justice should be pursued through lawful channels rather than violence or collective punishment.

Ebonyi Forum Rejects Stigmatisation of Indigenes

The group also distanced the wider Ebonyi community from the alleged actions of the individuals implicated in the incidents, warning against using the cases to stigmatise people from the state.

“The alleged actions of individuals must not be used to judge or stigmatise the entire Ebonyi population. The alleged conduct of any individual does not represent the collective character, identity or values of Ndi Ebonyi,” the statement said.

According to the forum, Ebonyi people are known for their hard work, resilience, peaceful disposition, hospitality and commitment to productive living.

It reaffirmed the commitment of Ebonyi indigenes residing in Anambra State to peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and harmonious relationships with their host communities.

The group further pledged to collaborate with security agencies, community leaders and other stakeholders to promote peace, protect human lives and uphold the dignity of every individual.

‘Violence Is Unacceptable, Justice Must Prevail’

Reflecting on the two incidents, the forum described the loss of lives within the same local government area as a painful development that demands serious attention from both the authorities and society.

It stressed that violent crimes affect not only the immediate families of victims but also the wider communities to which they belong.

“The Forum reiterates its unwavering condemnation of violence in all its forms and calls for justice, compassion, accountability and peaceful coexistence,” the statement said.

“Our message is clear: violence is unacceptable, human life must be protected, justice must prevail, and peace must be preserved among all communities.”

The forum urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and provide relevant information that could assist investigations, while allowing due process to take its course.

It maintained that a transparent investigation and lawful prosecution of anyone found responsible would be critical to achieving justice for the victims and preserving peace among communities in Anambra State.
