Presidential Candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Mr. Peter Obi has pushed back against what he described as the distortion of his message on Nigerians in the diaspora, insisting that his position has been misrepresented by political opponents.

Despite an earlier clarification from his media office, the former Anambra State Governor said he had decided to speak out personally to set the record straight.

He emphasised that Nigerians living abroad deserve appreciation for their sacrifices and the financial support they provide to millions of people back home.

“I deeply appreciate Nigerians in the diaspora who work tirelessly and make enormous sacrifices to support their families back home,” he said.

Obi noted that money sent home by Nigerians abroad helps families pay school fees, settle hospital bills, pay rent and provide food for their loved ones.

He stressed that he never intended to suggest that Nigerians in the diaspora should stop supporting their families.

“I never asked them to abandon their loved ones,” he declared.

PO: Nigeria Must Stop Depending on Relatives Abroad for Basic Survival

According to Peter Obi , the central message of his position is the need to build a country where citizens can meet their basic needs without depending on relatives living abroad.

He argued that Nigeria should focus on creating jobs, improving access to affordable healthcare, strengthening education and expanding economic opportunities for its people.

“Our goal must be to build a nation that provides jobs, affordable healthcare, quality education, and economic opportunities for its citizens,” he stated.

Obi maintained that his message was about addressing the conditions that make financial assistance from abroad necessary for many Nigerian households, rather than discouraging the generosity of those living overseas.

Taking aim at what he described as political misrepresentation, he reiterated that his position was about building a country that takes responsibility for the welfare of its citizens.

“Political opponents may twist my message, but the truth remains clear: I am not asking Nigerians abroad to abandon their families. I am advocating for a Nigeria that will no longer abandon its own people,” he said.

The 2023 Presidential candidate of Labour Party ended his message with prayers for Nigerians at home and abroad, expressing hope for the nation’s prosperity.

“God bless Nigerians at home and abroad. God bless Nigeria,” Obi added.
