Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has declared the support of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, pledging continued partnership with the Federal Government.
Soludo made the declaration in Abuja during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, where he addressed the gathering on behalf of APGA.
The governor described the gathering as evidence of what he called an unprecedented level of political and elite consensus in Nigeria, pointing to the presence of governors from different political parties.
“Mr President, to the best of my knowledge, there has never been a time in Nigeria’s history when there has been a greater consensus, a political and elite consensus,” Soludo said.
“This is the first time we have about 33 governors seated here in support of a sitting president.”
Explaining APGA’s decision to support Tinubu, the Anambra governor identified national unity, security and shared prosperity as the three core principles underpinning the party’s position.
“APGA believes in the unity of Nigeria. We believe in the security of Nigeria. We believe in the shared prosperity of Nigeria,” he said.
He added that these principles informed the party’s decision to align with the Tinubu administration.
“That is part of the reason we are throwing our weight behind the president, who symbolises these three pillars, for the Nigeria of today and the Nigeria of tomorrow,” Soludo stated.
Soludo Highlights APGA’s Progressive Ideology
The governor also highlighted APGA’s political history, drawing attention to its progressive orientation and positioning the party’s support for Tinubu within that ideological framework.
“APGA is the first party in Nigeria registered as progressive in 2002. The APC came 12 years later,” he said.
Soludo’s remarks underscored his argument that APGA’s support for the president was consistent with the party’s stated commitment to progressive governance.
Governor Backs Tinubu’s Economic Reforms
The Anambra governor also expressed support for the economic reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration, acknowledging the difficulties associated with implementing the policies.
He described the administration’s reform agenda as challenging but necessary, commending the president for taking what he characterised as difficult decisions.
“The path that you have chosen, that you have had the courage to take, is a difficult but necessary and required path. That is why we are joining with you, Mr President,” Soludo said.
The Tinubu administration’s economic policies have included the removal of the petrol subsidy, foreign exchange reforms and changes to the tax system. These measures have attracted both support and criticism over their economic and social implications.
Soludo further affirmed that APGA’s relationship with the Federal Government would extend beyond the 2027 presidential election.
“We are with you, Mr President. We are a partner in this journey back to Aso Rock, and we will remain your partner in the governance process,” he declared.
Soludo Describes Second Term as Acceleration Phase
Looking ahead to a possible second term for Tinubu, Soludo described the next phase of the administration’s agenda as an opportunity to move beyond economic stabilisation and reforms towards broader prosperity.
He characterised the proposed phase as an “acceleration phase”, with an emphasis on transitioning “from stability and reform to shared prosperity”.
The governor also referenced what he called “pragmatic progressivism” as a guiding philosophy for governance.
The event was attended by governors from the APC and other political parties, alongside APC leaders and members of the presidential campaign council.
Soludo’s declaration places APGA among the political parties whose leadership has expressed support for Tinubu’s anticipated 2027 re-election bid, signalling a cross-party alignment ahead of the next presidential election.
