The Anambra State House of Assembly has commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his prompt intervention in the Aguleri–Umuoba Anam communal crisis, saying his decisive actions helped de-escalate tensions and restore normalcy in the affected communities.

The commendation followed a motion sponsored by the member representing Anambra East Constituency, Mr Obi Nweke, during plenary on Tuesday, presided over by the Minority Leader, Mr Johnbosco Akaegbobi.

He expressed concern that the longstanding dispute, reportedly rooted in land and resource-related issues, had threatened lives and property while disrupting socio-economic activities across the area.

According to him, the governor’s timely intervention helped prevent the situation from degenerating further and provided greater security for residents.

“The prompt intervention of the governor was crucial in preventing further escalation and restoring confidence among residents of the affected communities,” Nweke said.

The lawmaker also called for sustained efforts to address the underlying issues fueling the dispute, stressing that lasting peace would require continued dialogue, responsible community engagement and effective conflict-resolution mechanisms.

The Assembly further commended the Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Boundary Committee, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, the Nigeria Police Force and other stakeholders for their roles in managing the crisis and working towards a lasting resolution.

Contributing to the debate, the Majority Leader, Mr Ikenna Ofodeme, Deputy Majority Leader, Mr Jude Akpua, and Mr Jude Umennajiego joined in commending the governor’s intervention.

The lawmakers stressed that the restoration of peace must be followed by sustained security measures and meaningful engagement among the affected communities.

They noted that stability in Aguleri and Umuoba Anam was essential to protecting lives and property, reviving economic activities and creating an environment conducive to development.

The lawmakers further emphasised that a peaceful environment remained critical to the actualisation of the Soludo administration’s vision of a liveable and prosperous Anambra State.

The Assembly urged all parties involved in the dispute to embrace dialogue and peaceful coexistence, while encouraging relevant government agencies and community leaders to sustain efforts aimed at preventing a recurrence of the crisis.
