Irrate youths from Aguleri are reportedly spoiling for a violent confrontation with security operatives for allegedly preventing them from launching further attacks on Umuoba Anam.
A leaked voice note (audio tape) revealed that section of youths fueling the war are already feeling frustrated by the strict enforcement of curfew and deterrent by troops in the area.
In the leaked audio, a community speaker questioned the deployment of soldiers around Ama-Igwè and urged traditional and community eaders to intervene and ensure that soldiers step aside for them to launch further attacks on Umuoba Anam.
In a strongly worded address to members of the Aguleri community, the speaker expressed concern that the presence of soldiers along the road leading towards Ama-Igwè could trigger a direct confrontation between local youths and the security forces.
Ama-Ìgwè Road leading to the disputed area
He questioned whether the military checkpoint represented the recognised boundary between Aguleri and neighbouring Anam, asking community leaders to clarify the situation.
“Is that roadblock the army erected on the road towards Ama-Igwè our boundary with Anam?” the speaker asked.
He also questioned the role of the traditional leadership in the unfolding situation, particularly the ability of the traditional ruler, whom he referred to as Igwe Mike, to intervene.
“Those who have a say should talk to that man, Mike. If he has a plan, let him do something,” he said, calling on the traditional ruler and other community leaders to act before the situation deteriorates further.
The speaker warned that the presence of soldiers could shift the focus of the conflict from the neighbouring community to a confrontation with the military.
“The next thing is that we will no longer attack Anam but face the army,” he warned.
He further alleged that the military had prevented youths from advancing towards Anam and claimed that a young man from Isiokwe was killed by a soldier rather than by people from Anam. The claims could not be independently verified from the statement.
The speaker also warned of the possibility of an overnight confrontation.
“We will exchange fire with troops this night till morning, and Anam will be laughing at us,” he said, while urging the community to conclude its meeting and consider its next steps before leaving to fight.
He drew comparisons with a previous dispute involving Anaku and Omor, alleging that the deployment of security personnel in that case eventually resulted in soldiers moving beyond their original position and houses being set ablaze in Anaku.
“That is exactly what is about to happen at Aguleri,” he claimed.
The speaker subsequently challenged Aguleri’s traditional and administrative leadership to intervene and prevent further escalation.
“So nobody has connection and voice in Aguleri that can make them vacate Ama-Igwè Aguleri?” he asked.
He accused the traditional ruler and the President-General of remaining silent while youths could potentially be exposed to danger.
“Anybody who does not have the capacity for Igwe or PG should step aside so that those who are angry take charge,” he declared.
The address ended with another warning directed at the community’s leadership, including Igwe Oba Agu and Bony Ilegbune, as the speaker predicted that further confrontation could occur.
“Take note of what is going to happen tomorrow,” he warned.
The statements come amid heightened tensions in the area, but the specific allegations concerning the military deployment, the reported killing of the Isiokwe youth and the activities attributed to the various parties require independent verification.
Community leaders and security authorities are expected to clarify the purpose and location of the military deployment and take steps to prevent further violence or loss of life.
