According to accounts gathered by AnambraDaily, the latest confrontation began after youths from Aguleri allegedly moved into the disputed area to erect a signpost. The development was reportedly resisted by residents of Umuoba Anam, who claim ownership of the land.

What began as a confrontation involving an exchange of stones reportedly escalated when armed youths from Aguleri allegedly regrouped and returned to the area, with witnesses reporting gunshots and the burning of houses at Umuoba Anam.

The circumstances surrounding the reported killing and the extent of the destruction to properties could not be independently verified at the time of filing this report.

The latest violence has prompted the Anambra East Local Government authorities to impose a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Aguleri and Umuoba Anam.

The Mayor of Anambra East Local Government Area, Hon. Sir Ifeanyi Chinweze, announced that the curfew would take effect from Thursday, October 1, 2026, and remain in force daily from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. until further notice.

In an official notice issued by the Mayor’s office in Otuocha, residents, business owners and other members of the public in the affected communities were directed to remain indoors during the restricted hours.

The local government said the measure was necessary to protect lives and property, maintain public order and prevent further escalation of the security situation.

“All residents, business owners and members of the public in Aguleri and Umuoba Anam are hereby directed to comply strictly with the curfew by remaining indoors between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. daily until the suspension of the directive is officially announced,” the notice stated.

Non-essential movements and public gatherings have also been prohibited during the curfew hours.

The directive, however, exempts authorised security personnel and individuals responding to genuine emergencies, subject to appropriate security authorisation.

Chinweze also urged traditional rulers, Presidents General, community leaders, youth organisations and other stakeholders to ensure that the directive reaches residents and that the security measures are observed.

The Mayor appealed for calm and cooperation with security agencies as efforts continue to contain the situation and restore peace in the affected communities.

“The Office of the Mayor appeals to all residents to remain calm, law-abiding and cooperative with security agencies as concerted efforts are made to address the prevailing situation and restore lasting peace and security in the affected communities,” the statement said.

The latest confrontation is linked to a longstanding land dispute involving Aguleri and Umuoba Anam, with Thursday’s reported violence raising fresh concerns about the safety of residents and the potential for further clashes.

Authorities have not announced the number of casualties or the exact extent of property damage. Further updates are expected as security agencies assess the situation.

Residents in the affected communities have been urged to comply with the curfew and report security threats to the appropriate authorities.
