Nigeria Crowned Africa Champions, Seal ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2027 Ticket

Nigeria’s Yellow Greens have produced a stunning finish to their ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier campaign, defeating Zimbabwe by four runs in a tense final to claim the championship and secure Africa’s sole qualification ticket for the 2027 World Cup.

In a dramatic low-scoring final at the ESTIM Ground, TCA Cricket Arena in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on Saturday, Nigeria defended a modest total of 98 to bowl Zimbabwe out for 94 with just one delivery remaining.

The victory capped a perfect campaign for Nigeria, who won all five of their matches and also earned promotion to Division 1.

Nigeria will now represent Africa alongside South Africa at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2027 in Bangladesh and Nepal.

The final, however, was anything but straightforward.

Batting first, Nigeria struggled against a disciplined Zimbabwe bowling attack and were restricted to 98 for six in their allotted 20 overs.

Captain Christabel Chukwuonye produced a crucial late cameo, scoring 21 off 19 deliveries, while Beauty Oguai made 19 off 35 balls and Jessica Bieni contributed 15 off 25.

Deborah Bassey provided the late impetus Nigeria desperately needed, smashing an unbeaten 10 from just four deliveries to lift her side to a competitive total.

Zimbabwe’s Christina Mutasa was the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets for 11 runs from four overs, including a maiden. Tadiwanashe Garutsa was also economical, conceding just eight runs in her four overs while taking one wicket.

Zimbabwe appeared to make a confident start to the chase, with Nicolette Nyika scoring 18 and Mutasa adding 13. But Nigeria’s bowlers responded with a flurry of wickets, reducing Zimbabwe to 38 for five and putting the defending champions firmly in control.

Just when Zimbabwe appeared to be heading for defeat, Bethel Zinyama and Salem Museka launched a remarkable recovery.

The pair put together a crucial 47-run sixth-wicket partnership, with Zinyama scoring 21 from 31 deliveries and Museka making 27 from 32 to bring Zimbabwe within striking distance of the target.

But Nigeria refused to buckle under the pressure.

Peace Usen led the bowling attack with three wickets for 19 runs, while Jennifer Godwin claimed two for 11 and Anointed Akhigbe took two for 15.

With Zimbabwe needing only a handful of runs in the closing stages, Nigeria held their composure. They finally dismissed Zimbabwe for 94 in 19.5 overs, sealing a dramatic four-run victory and sparking celebrations among the Nigerian camp.

For captain Chukwuonye, the triumph was an emotional one.

“I actually cried when the game was over because I couldn’t really express what I was feeling. The next phase is just the beginning and we know it will be tougher.”

Reflecting on her team’s resilience, she added:

“My team has really been the best. They listened to the coaches, stayed united and, even with the pressure in the last over, they were able to hold their nerves.

“I wouldn’t be here holding this trophy without the support of the coaching crew and my players. I am very grateful to all of them.”

Nigeria’s championship-winning campaign was built on consistency and determination. The Yellow Greens defeated Uganda, Malawi and hosts Tanzania in the group stage before overcoming Rwanda in the semi-final and Zimbabwe in the title decider.

The tournament also highlighted the growing strength of women’s cricket across the continent.

Tanzania Cricket Association Chairman, Dr B. S. Sreekumar, praised the successful hosting of the competition and its contribution to the development of young African cricketers.

“Hosting this qualifier has been a proud moment for the Tanzania Cricket Association.

“Over the past week, we have welcomed eight national teams and witnessed competitive, high-quality cricket across both grounds at the TCA Cricket Arena.

“Beyond the results, the tournament has showcased the continued growth of women’s cricket across Africa and the importance of providing strong pathways for young players to compete at international level.”

Sreekumar also thanked the International Cricket Council, participating teams, officials, volunteers, partners and supporters for contributing to the tournament’s success.

“Tanzania is proud to have provided the stage for an important event in the development of the next generation of African women cricketers, and we congratulate Nigeria on earning their place at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2027.”

Nigeria’s triumph marks another significant milestone for the country’s women’s cricket programme.

After an unbeaten qualifying campaign in Dar es Salaam, the Yellow Greens now turn their attention to the global stage, where they will face the best young women cricketers in the world at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2027 in Bangladesh and Nepal.

In the other classification matches, Uganda finished third after defeating Rwanda by seven wickets. Hosts Tanzania secured fifth place with a 29-run victory over Kenya, while Namibia defeated Malawi by nine wickets to finish seventh.

For Nigeria, however, the headline belongs to a young team that held its nerve when it mattered most: African champions and World Cup-bound.
