Police-Led Security Team Intercepts Two Vehicles in Anambra, Arrests 9, Recovers Three AK-47 Rifles

A police-led joint security operation in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State has led to the arrest of nine suspects and the recovery of three AK-47 rifles, a pump-action gun, charms and other items.

The operation was carried out in the early hours of Friday, August 28, 2026, by the Joint Operation Base, Aguata, led by the Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP Austin Elaigwu.

The team, comprising operatives of the Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Immigration Service and the Agunechemba Security Outfit, intercepted two vehicles during a stop-and-search operation at a checkpoint in Isuofia.

The vehicles — a custom-coloured Toyota Sienna and an ash-coloured Toyota RAV4 — were searched, resulting in the arrest of nine occupants: seven males and two females.

Security operatives subsequently recovered three AK-47 rifles, one pump-action gun, charms and other items described as relevant to the ongoing investigation.

According to the police, the suspects and recovered items were immediately taken into custody for questioning and further investigation.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspects reportedly claimed that they were security operatives operating in a neighbouring state. However, police authorities said they were unable to provide satisfactory explanations concerning their identities, affiliations, possession of the firearms and the purpose of their movement into Anambra State.

Commending the joint security team, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, described the operation as a product of effective intelligence gathering and stop-and-search measures.

The Commissioner urged security personnel across the state to remain vigilant and sustain intelligence-led operations aimed at preventing the movement of illegal firearms and other security threats.

The police said investigation into the matter is ongoing, with further developments expected as investigators establish the identities, affiliations and activities of the suspects.

The Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting residents and maintaining security across the state.
