Two classroom blocks have been pulled down while several other structures may risk collapse following severe erosion menace in Ezi-Awka Community Secondary School, Awka, Anambra state.

The ugly development has reportedly forced some students to withdraw from the school, while remaining ones study under constant danger from the threatened structures.

Speaking during an assessment visit by officials of the Anambra State Erosion, Watershed and Climate Change Agency (ANSEWCCA), Principal of the school, Mrs Eucharia Ogbunyi described the situation as alarming.

She appealed for urgent government intervention.

She said, “The erosion had already destroyed two classroom blocks, while four additional classroom blocks and the staff room are at risk of collapse.

“The worsening condition has forced some students to withdraw from the school, while those remaining, alongside their teachers, face constant danger from the threatened structures,” she said.

Chairman, School-Based Management Committee, Chief Igwedimma Muologwu also expressed concern over security challenges linked to the deteriorating school environment.

“The porous nature of the school premises had previously exposed the institution to attacks by cultists until security measures were strengthened.

“The persistent flooding and erosion is caused by poor urban planning and inadequate drainage infrastructure in the area,” he said.

An engineer, Mr Alex Chukwunwike, proposed an integrated erosion-control project for the school, comprising landscaping, concrete works and drainage construction

He explained that the project would harness and channel floodwater to Obibia Stream, located about 1.25 kilometres from the school.

Responding, Acting Managing Director of ANSEWCCA, Mr Ifeanyi Nwasinoke, said the visit was to evaluate the extent of damage caused by the erosion, assuring the school community of government’s attention.

He said the agency would prepare and submit its assessment report to the appropriate authorities for necessary action aimed at addressing the erosion menace and safeguarding lives and property.
