Radio Nigeria journalist, Alfred Ajayi, has been named winner of the Best Solutions Journalism Reporting category at the 2025 Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) Excellence in Journalism Awards.

The announcement was made on Wednesday during the annual ceremony that honours outstanding professionalism, ethical reporting, and impactful storytelling across West Africa.

Ajayi’s award-winning story, “Anambra Free Maternal Care Policy Sparks Hope Despite Challenges,” spotlighted the positive outcomes of the state’s free antenatal and delivery services.

The report drew from testimonies of pregnant women and healthcare workers who shared how the initiative has boosted patronage of primary health facilities, even as it highlighted lingering barriers that limit its full impact.

The judging panel commended the report for its depth, clarity, and strong emphasis on evidence-based responses to public issues—hallmarks of quality solutions journalism.

Reacting to the recognition, Ajayi expressed gratitude to God and to the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) for providing a platform that nurtures professional excellence.

“First of all, I dedicate this to God who gives inspiration that makes the difference. I am also grateful to my employer, Radio Nigeria, who provided the opportunity that has brought out the best in me,” he said.

Ajayi noted that the award holds special significance because it validates his dedication to solutions journalism since he embraced the model in 2023.

“This award is particularly cherished because it is a sweet reward for my consistent efforts since 2023 when I came to know about Solutions Journalism. Indeed, hard work pays, no matter the incentive or enticement to the contrary,” he added.

Widely regarded as one of West Africa’s most respected journalism honours, the CJID Excellence in Journalism Awards continues to celebrate exceptional contributions to media development, accountability, and innovative reporting across the region.
