Anambra state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh has cautioned owners of private schools against prioritizing monetary gains over delivery of quality education.
Chuma-Udeh gave the warning while declaring open a four-day capacity-building workshop for private school proprietors and teachers.
The training, holding at St John’s Girls Secondary School, Awka, is designed to equip participants with modern teaching and administrative skills required in 21st-century schools.
The Commissioner said the workshop was part of the state’s drive to align private schools with the mission and vision of the Governor Chukwuma Soludo-led administration for equitable and quality education.
She stressed the importance of teachers’ quality in national development, noting that continuous training is necessary to keep educators updated with new methods of teaching.
While urging school proprietors to attend seminars at least twice yearly, Chuma-Udeh quipped, “every proprietor must constantly reflect on the kind of education being offered.
“The proprietor should ask: can my students compete favorably with their counterparts at the local, national and international levels?”
Earlier, Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ifeoma Agbaizu said the Ministry would embark on monitoring visits to ensure implementation of the lessons, particularly those tied to school approval standards.
She encouraged participants to pay attention to the training.
Delivering her lecture on “Aide Memoires for Lesson Observation in Quality Assurance and Continuous Learning,” Dr. Bibianna Okoli stressed need for conducive learning environment, clearly defined school mission and vision, and harmonized continuous assessment.
Another facilitator, Dr. Tochukwu Melifeonwu, introduced participants to Robotics, its evolution, and its relevance in today’s educational system.
The workshop, which started August 26, will end on August 29, 2025.
