The Labour Party governorship candidate in Anambra State and former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Chief Dr. George Moghalu, has expressed profound sorrow over the brutal killing of Ichie Kennedy Igboanugo, his two wives, and daughter in Ekwuru Isseke, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Wednesday, May 22, 2025, was reportedly carried out by unidentified gunmen. The tragedy has since sparked widespread grief and condemnation across the state.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Dr. Moghalu described the attack as a painful reminder of the rising insecurity threatening peace and stability in Anambra communities.
“This is not just another crime, it is a stark call for urgent, coordinated security measures,” he said.
Dr. Moghalu urged government authorities, traditional rulers, and local communities to unite in addressing the state’s security challenges. He emphasized the importance of proactive and collaborative action to prevent future tragedies.
“When families are slaughtered in their homes, our response must be unified, swift, and compassionate. Enough is enough. We must restore peace and hope in our communities,” he declared.
Extending his condolences to the grieving Ekwuru Isseke community, Moghalu also expressed deep concern for the sole surviving daughter of the Igboanugo family. He appealed to authorities and well-meaning individuals to provide her with trauma support, financial assistance, and comprehensive protection.
“To the daughter left behind, your pain is unimaginable. But you are not alone. We must stand with you, not just in sympathy, but through tangible support and care,” he said.
Highlighting the increasing wave of violent crime even in the state capital, Awka, Dr. Moghalu called for the urgent deployment of more visible and effective security strategies.
“This is no time for delay or distraction. The safety of our people must take precedence. We need decisive action to restore public confidence and safeguard our communities,” he concluded.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims and called for their deaths to serve as a wake-up call for renewed commitment to security and the protection of every citizen in Anambra State.
