The Rotary Club of Onitsha Metropolis has urged governments at all levels, business owners, community leaders and professional organisations to close ranks and develop practical solutions to the challenges confronting small businesses in Anambra State.
The Club said stronger partnerships were necessary to expand business opportunities, create jobs, improve household incomes and promote sustainable economic growth, particularly in Onitsha, one of the South-East’s leading commercial centres.
The call featured prominently at a fellowship organised by the Club to mark Community and Economic Development Month under the theme, “Building Stronger Small Businesses: A Collaborative Approach to Job Creation and Sustainable Economic Development in Onitsha.”
The gathering provided a platform for Rotarians to examine the role of small businesses in the local economy, assess the difficulties facing entrepreneurs and discuss how coordinated interventions could strengthen enterprises and improve livelihoods.
Onitsha’s commercial economy depends heavily on traders, artisans, distributors, manufacturers and other small business operators whose activities support thousands of households and contribute to economic activities across Anambra State and neighbouring communities.
However, participants noted that the ability of these businesses to expand and generate more jobs depends partly on access to finance, infrastructure, management skills, technology and a supportive operating environment.
Presenting a paper at the fellowship, Rtn. Ifeanyi Ezemuoka identified limited access to finance, high operating costs, inadequate infrastructure, poor financial management, restricted market access and limited digital skills as major challenges facing small businesses.

Contributions from Rtn. Obiaku Ijeoma Juliet, Assistant Governor for Onitsha Zones 18, District 9142; Past President Rtn. Oby Arinze; and Past Assistant Governor Rtn. Ossai Obinaefo further highlighted the need for stronger government support and sustained engagement among entrepreneurs and other stakeholders.
The participants stressed that isolated interventions would have limited impact unless government policies, private-sector initiatives and community development efforts were better coordinated.
They maintained that small businesses need more than encouragement to succeed; they require practical support systems that improve access to finance, infrastructure, skills, technology and markets.
Rotary President: Government, Businesses Must Work Together
President of the Rotary Club of Onitsha Metropolis, Rtn. Ezuma Smart Chinedu, urged government authorities at the local, state and federal levels to strengthen collaboration with business owners and community stakeholders.
He said closer engagement with entrepreneurs would help policymakers and development partners understand the realities of operating small businesses and design interventions that respond to their actual needs.
Ezuma also called on business owners to take greater responsibility for improving their operations through proper financial management, accurate record-keeping, digital adoption and consistent product quality.
He encouraged entrepreneurs to embrace innovation, strengthen customer relations and build strategic partnerships that could improve competitiveness, expand market access and support business expansion.
Traditional Rulers, Town Unions Get Fresh Call
The Rotary president urged traditional rulers, town unions and community development associations to create conditions that allow businesses to operate safely and productively.
He highlighted the importance of peace, security, environmental sanitation and community cooperation in sustaining commercial activities.
He also called for stronger community-level support for vocational training, youth empowerment and skills development to help residents access employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.
For local government authorities, Ezuma emphasised the need to improve market facilities, access roads, sanitation and other infrastructure essential to traders and artisans.
He further advocated regular consultations between local authorities and business associations to identify challenges and develop workable solutions.
Anambra, Federal Governments Urged to Strengthen Business Support
At the state level, Ezuma encouraged the Anambra State Government to sustain efforts to promote entrepreneurship, improve infrastructure, expand access to business support programmes and deepen collaboration with financial institutions and private-sector operators.
He also called on the Federal Government to strengthen measures aimed at improving the ease of doing business, expanding access to affordable financing, promoting local production and addressing infrastructure and energy challenges affecting small enterprises.
According to the Rotary president, effective partnerships would help ensure that policies and business support programmes translate into meaningful improvements for entrepreneurs.
He noted that the strength and sustainability of businesses have wider implications for employment, household welfare, government revenue and long-term economic development.
Rotary Unveils Proposed Support Areas for Small Businesses
To translate the discussions into practical action, members explored potential initiatives through which the Club could complement existing entrepreneurship and community development programmes.
The proposed interventions include business education in bookkeeping, budgeting, financial management and business planning; mentorship linking experienced professionals with emerging entrepreneurs; and youth empowerment through apprenticeships, internships and vocational training.
Members also identified market development through digital marketing and business networking, as well as sustainable enterprise practices such as recycling and participation in the circular economy.
Another proposed priority is sustained engagement with government agencies, financial institutions, business associations and development partners to improve coordination and expand opportunities for small businesses.
The Club clarified that prospective initiatives would depend on available resources, partnerships and identified community needs, with an emphasis on measurable results.
Members also stressed the importance of working with existing government and private-sector programmes to avoid duplication and make better use of available resources.
Club Reaffirms Commitment to Community Development
The fellowship concluded with participants recognising small businesses as important drivers of employment, household income and inclusive economic development.
They agreed that entrepreneurs must strengthen their businesses through innovation, sound management and responsible practices, while government, professional bodies and community leaders must contribute by improving infrastructure, developing skills and creating opportunities for enterprise growth.
The Rotary Club of Onitsha Metropolis reaffirmed its commitment to community-centred initiatives designed to strengthen livelihoods, expand economic opportunities and improve residents’ wellbeing.
As Onitsha continues to play a major role in the commercial life of the South-East, the Club believes that stronger partnerships, better-supported entrepreneurs and practical business development initiatives can help unlock greater economic opportunities for Anambra State and Nigeria. #
