Peter Obi has praised the alumni of the College of the Immaculate Conception (CIC) for investing in their alma mater, urging Nigerians to embrace collective responsibility in improving educational institutions across the country.
The former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) made the remarks during a visit to CIC, where he inspected several development projects executed by the school’s alumni association.

Led by its president, Dr Valentine Ozoigbo, a Nigerian medical doctor based in the United States, the association has funded the construction of a multipurpose hall, a dormitory complex and a sports complex. A five-storey staff quarters building is also under construction, with further projects being planned.
Impressed by the scale of the projects, Obi described the alumni’s efforts as a practical demonstration of commitment to educational development and giving back to society.
He noted that people who benefited from educational institutions should consider it a responsibility to contribute to their continued growth, ensuring that younger generations have access to better learning facilities.
Obi called on alumni associations nationwide to follow CIC’s example, emphasising that improving schools does not necessarily require extraordinary personal wealth. Rather, consistent contributions and collective commitment can deliver meaningful results.

‘Education Is an Investment in the Future’
Obi stressed that education remained one of the most important investments a country could make, arguing that Nigeria’s long-term development depended on the quality of education available to its citizens.
He maintained that governments, communities and individuals must work together to strengthen educational institutions and provide students with the facilities they need to succeed.
During the visit, he also interacted with CIC students, urging them to remain focused on their studies, embrace discipline and work hard to achieve their goals.
He encouraged them to respect their teachers, value their guidance and sustain good relationships with them beyond their school years.
Obi also praised the school’s teachers for their dedication, commending the cleanliness of the premises and the level of discipline among the students.
CIC Principal, Alumni President Welcome Obi’s Visit
Earlier, the school’s principal, Rev. Fr. Oliver Ngwu, expressed appreciation for Obi’s continued advocacy for education, noting that his commitment had been demonstrated through both his public statements and personal actions.
The alumni association president, Dr Valentine Ozoigbo, also thanked Obi for accepting the invitation to visit the institution.
Ozoigbo expressed admiration for Obi’s humility and personal involvement, particularly his decision to accompany the delegation around the school premises to inspect the projects firsthand.
Obi Links Education, Healthcare and Poverty Reduction to National Progress
Reaffirming his position on national development, Obi said education should go beyond obtaining certificates and focus on preparing individuals to contribute meaningfully to society.
He argued that a nation’s future depended substantially on the opportunities it created for its children and the resources committed to developing their potential.
He further maintained that education and healthcare investment, together with sustained efforts to reduce poverty, should remain central to Nigeria’s development agenda.
The visit underscored how alumni-led initiatives can help improve school infrastructure and support the broader objective of delivering better educational opportunities to future generations.
