2027 Election: ‘I’m Not Going to Senate to Enjoy Sirens, Tinted Cars’ — Samben Nwosu

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Anambra South District, Prince Samben Nwosu, has said he is seeking election to the Senate to provide effective representation for his constituents, rather than enjoy the privileges attached to public office.

Nwosu said he would not be going to the Senate to parade convoys, sirens and expensive vehicles with tinted glasses, but to attract meaningful development and ensure that the people of Anambra South benefit directly from democratic governance.

The former Federal Commissioner at the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) made the remarks on Tuesday, September 29, at his country home in Ndiakwu, Otolo Nnewi, while speaking on his ambition and his plans for the senatorial district.

According to him, his decision to contest was driven by what he described as the need for a change in the quality of representation currently available to the people of Anambra South.

“I am making myself available to bring a positive change in the representation of Anambra South Senatorial Zone. I believe our people are not comfortable with the kind of representation they have presently at the Senate.

“I am not going there to blow sirens or to enjoy tinted-glass vehicles. I am going there for serious business of representation and to ensure that our people benefit from the dividends of democracy,” he said.

On concerns about possible vote buying and electoral manipulation in the 2027 election, Nwosu expressed confidence that voters in Anambra South would defend their mandate.

“Vote buying cannot work in 2027. Anambra South has decided where to go. This coming election is between political moneybags and the good people of Anambra South, who have been denied good governance since Senator Ifeanyi Ubah died,” he said.

“I am not in the class of moneybags. I am coming into the race to make a difference in political representation. My people know me, and I know them. They know that in the coming election, Prince Samben Nwosu is capable of offering them quality representation and good governance.

“Rigging cannot work in 2027 because the masses are ready to vote and defend their mandates.”

Nwosu also argued that his longstanding relationship with the electorate and his grassroots involvement would work in his favour, saying voters in the district had become more conscious of the need to elect representatives who would remain accessible after elections.

He criticised the practice of elected representatives allegedly becoming inaccessible after winning elections, only to return to their constituents shortly before another election with food items and other temporary incentives in exchange for political support.

According to him, such an approach should be replaced with sustainable empowerment programmes that can improve the economic wellbeing of constituents throughout the electoral cycle.

“If elected, every LGA in my senatorial district will have my signature project and will feel my presence. Whatever bill or motion I present on the floor of the Senate will be such that it has a direct impact on the daily lives and businesses of our people,” he said.

Nwosu said his proposed empowerment model would be designed to provide lasting economic opportunities rather than short-term benefits that, according to him, could be exhausted within days.

“If elected, I will introduce an empowerment model that will sustain my constituents throughout the electoral cycle, rather than a situation where voters’ mandates and consciences are purchased with stipends that may sustain them for one week or less,” he said.

Addressing the strength of rival political parties and candidates, Nwosu described himself as a grassroots politician with significant name recognition across Anambra South.

He said the presence of the PDP across the country would also provide the political structure required to mobilise support and protect the party’s votes during the election.

“APC, APGA and NDC candidates cannot be a threat to my aspiration. Apart from my closeness to the people at the grassroots, PDP remains the only political party whose structure has a noticeable presence in every household in Nigeria. So, getting the mandate and defending it cannot be our problem,” he said.

On his priorities if elected, Nwosu listed youth development, erosion control, education and other interventions aimed at improving the socioeconomic conditions of residents across Anambra South.

He said his objective would be to ensure that representation at the National Assembly translates into tangible benefits for the people rather than being limited to legislative appearances and political privileges.
