COOU Secures NUC Approval for 16 New Degree Programmes, Admissions Set to Begin

Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) has secured approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence 16 new academic programmes, paving the way for the institution to begin admitting students into the programmes.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, announced the development on Thursday, September 24, 2026, during the institution’s 35th Inaugural Lecture held at the ETF Auditorium.

Omenugha, who addressed the gathering virtually, disclosed that the NUC granted approval after successfully completing its resource verification exercise at the University.

The development follows the deployment of an NUC verification team to COOU last month to assess the institution’s infrastructure, facilities and other resources required for the commencement of academic activities in the proposed programmes.

The resource verification exercise was a key requirement for obtaining regulatory approval and commencing student admissions.

Confirming the approval, the Vice-Chancellor said the University would move promptly to commence the admission process for prospective students.

“The 16 programmes have now received the necessary approval from the National Universities Commission, paving the way for the University to commence admissions,” Omenugha announced.

The Vice-Chancellor’s absence from the inaugural lecture was attributed to her trip to Abuja, where she was involved in concluding processes connected with the approval of the new programmes.

The newly approved programmes are:

1. B.Sc. International Relations
2. B.Rad. Radiography
3. B.Sc. Software Engineering
4. B.Sc. Cyber Security
5. B.Sc. Data Science
6. B.Sc. Public Health
7. B.Sc. Project Management
8. B.Sc. Logistics and Supply Chain Management
9. B.Sc. Transport Management
10. B.Sc. Taxation
11. B.Sc. Procurement
12. B.Sc. Information Technology
13. B.EHS. Environmental Health Sciences
14. O.D. Optometry
15. D.P.T. Physiotherapy

Note: The original submission lists 16 programmes but contains 15 distinct entries. The 16th programme should be confirmed with COOU before publication.

The approval represents an expansion of COOU’s academic offerings and is expected to provide prospective students with additional opportunities to pursue professional and emerging fields of study within the University.

The University community has welcomed the development, with the newly approved programmes expected to produce their first cohorts of students once admissions commence.
