Man, 20 Arrested for Allegedly Killing Father with Machete in Anambra

A 20-year-old man, identified as Pascal Ogbogu, has been arrested for allegedly killing his 56-year-old father in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Ogbogu reportedly attacked his father with a machete on the evening of August 25, 2026, for reasons yet to be established.

According to the Anambra State Police Command, the suspect fled the scene after the incident but was later arrested in the early hours of August 26 through the combined efforts of the police, family members and members of the Abatete Vigilante.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect was arrested following a distress report.

Ikenga said police operatives from the Eziowelle Police Division, upon arriving at the scene, found the deceased lying in a pool of blood with a deep machete wound to the throat.

He said, “Preliminary information reveals that, on the evening of 25th August 2026, the suspect allegedly attacked his father and fled the scene.

“Following a distress report, Police operatives from the Eziowelle Police Division, with the assistance of family members and members of the Abatete Vigilante, promptly mobilised to the scene, where they found the lifeless body of the deceased in a pool of blood, with a deep machete wound to the throat.

“The body was subsequently evacuated to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.”

According to the police spokesperson, the suspect was apprehended in the early hours of August 26 after security operatives received timely information from community members.

He added that the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the prompt response of the police and the support provided by members of the community.

“The CP particularly commended the family members, community members, Police operatives and Vigilante personnel for their prompt response and cooperation,” Ikenga said.

“He noted that effective community participation, timely information sharing and strong partnership between the Police and local communities remain important to successful policing and the protection of lives and property.”

Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, while commiserating with the family of the deceased, directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.

He said the directive was aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensuring that all relevant facts were properly determined.

“The Commissioner assured the family and members of the public that the investigation will be conducted professionally, thoroughly and diligently, in accordance with the law, and that the suspect will be made to face due process upon conclusion of the investigation,” he added.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
