AWKA, Anambra State — In a move aimed at strengthening food production and improving household incomes, women farmers from communities across Anambra State have received agricultural inputs and practical training on modern post-harvest management.

The intervention was delivered under an empowerment programme sponsored by High Chief Dr. Christopher Ndubuisi (Ikenga Umuawulu), in collaboration with the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare and the Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, Ebonyi State.

The programme, held at the Women Development Centre, Awka, as part of the August Meeting Empowerment Programme, focused on equipping women with practical skills to minimise post-harvest losses while improving the storage and preservation of farm produce.

Participants were trained on the proper handling, preservation and storage of agricultural produce, with emphasis on techniques capable of extending shelf life, reducing waste and improving the economic value of farm outputs.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, said the initiative was consistent with the ministry’s mandate to empower women to become economically productive and active contributors to their families and communities.

She urged the beneficiaries to apply the knowledge gained during the training and make judicious use of the seedlings and other agricultural materials provided.

She also acknowledged the Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, for providing the technical expertise for the training and expressed appreciation to Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, for his continued support for women-focused programmes across the state.

The sponsor, High Chief Dr. Christopher Ndubuisi, said the initiative was conceived to strengthen the capacity of women engaged in agriculture by providing them with seedlings, farm inputs and equipment to improve cultivation, harvesting and overall productivity.

He pledged continued support for initiatives that promote food production, agricultural development and economic empowerment among women.

The programme ended with the distribution of seedlings and other agricultural materials to the beneficiaries.

The women were encouraged to put the resources to productive use and apply the lessons from the training to improve farm yields, reduce losses and strengthen their livelihoods.
