Army Nabs Suspected Kidnap Kingpin Fleeing Enugu, Recovers 4 AK-47s, 133 Rounds of Ammunition

The Nigerian Army has announced the arrest of an alleged commander of a kidnapping syndicate who was reportedly intercepted while attempting to flee Enugu State following a sustained intelligence-led operation by security forces.

The operation, which the Army described as a significant breakthrough in efforts to dismantle kidnapping networks in the South-East, also resulted in the recovery of four AK-47 rifles, seven AK-47 magazines and 133 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition from a concealed weapons cache in the state.

Troops of the 82 Division/Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, carried out the operation in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The development was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Lt. Col. Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni.

The Army said the suspect was tracked to the Gariki General Area of Enugu State following the deployment of intelligence gathered during investigations into a kidnapping incident in Udi Local Government Area on August 2.

According to the military, the syndicate was allegedly responsible for the abduction of two persons in the area.

The security operation reportedly intensified after troops killed one alleged member of the group and arrested another suspect.

Information obtained during the interrogation of the arrested suspect allegedly gave investigators crucial leads regarding the identity and location of the syndicate’s fleeing commander.

The intelligence also reportedly revealed the location of the group’s hidden weapons.

“Acting on the intelligence,” the Army said, troops launched a coordinated manhunt for the suspect and eventually intercepted him as he allegedly attempted to escape from Enugu State.

The operation subsequently led security personnel to a concealed arms cache where they recovered four AK-47 rifles, seven magazines and 133 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition.

The recovery is potentially significant to the ongoing investigation, as the weapons and ammunition could provide investigators with additional leads into the alleged activities, structure and operational capacity of the kidnapping syndicate.

The arrested suspect is expected to remain in custody while investigations continue. Security authorities are also expected to investigate his alleged connection to the reported abduction in Udi and determine whether other members of the syndicate remain at large.

The Army’s latest announcement underscores the growing emphasis on intelligence-driven operations and inter-agency collaboration in the fight against kidnapping and other violent crimes in the South-East.

Security agencies have repeatedly relied on intelligence from arrested suspects and members of the public to identify criminal hideouts, trace fleeing suspects and recover illegally held weapons.

The Army said the operation reflected the determination of security forces to pursue criminal elements and disrupt their networks.

Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations into the alleged kidnapping syndicate and the recovered weapons progress.
