Ojoto Women Leader Bows Out with Strong Legacy, Urges Peace and Unity

Outgoing Community Women Leader (CWL) and President-General of Ojoto Akanasato Women (Inyom Ojoto), Hon. Mrs. Anthonia Okonkwo, has urged women of the community to uphold peace, unity and forgiveness as the foundation for sustained development in Ojoto, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Speaking at the 2026 August Women’s Meeting held on August 1 at Ojoto Town Hall, Okonkwo used her farewell address to appeal for reconciliation and unwavering support for the incoming leadership.

“Do not allow the cord of love that God used to bind us together to break. Let the light He kindled in us continue to shine. Share every idea that promotes peace, no matter who brings it. We are one people,” she said.

In an emotional appeal, the outgoing leader sought forgiveness from members for any shortcomings during her tenure.

“If I offended anyone while carrying out my responsibilities, I sincerely ask for your forgiveness. I also forgive everyone who may have offended me. Let love and unity remain our watchword.”

She charged members to rally behind the incoming President-General, Engr. Dr. Francisca Nwafulugo, assuring them that the outgoing executive would always be available to provide guidance whenever needed.

A Legacy of Service

Reflecting on her four-year administration, Okonkwo said her executive inherited less than ₦25,000 in the association’s account in 2022 but is leaving behind a financially stable, debt-free organization with notable achievements.

According to her, the administration:

• Empowered 12 indigent women—one from each of the 12 villages in Ojoto Akanasato—to establish small businesses.
• Reviewed and produced the association’s official constitution.
• Supported sick and bedridden members with funds, food and medication.
• Purchased and installed two industrial cassava fufu processing and pounding machines for Ojoto Uno and Ojoto Oboofia women.
• Secured all available government benefits and intervention opportunities for the association.

“We are handing over a debt-free association with funds still in the coffers. We thank God for helping us leave a legacy of service and accountability,” she stated.

Incoming Leader Promises Inclusive Leadership

Incoming President-General, Engr. Dr. Francisca Nwafulugo, pledged transparent, inclusive and selfless leadership while calling on women to remain united.

“Women are builders of homes and communities. Together, we will empower more women and youths and make Ojoto a more desirable hometown. I ask for your prayers, support and cooperation.”

Leaders Advocate Moral Values, Women’s Empowerment

The Mayor of Idemili South, Hon. Mrs. Amaka Obi, urged mothers to instill discipline and hard work in their children.

“Reject immorality, laziness and the get-rich-quick mentality. Encourage your children to embrace education, skills acquisition and honest livelihoods.”

Also speaking, the Local Government Women Development Officer, Lady Oby Nwosu, and Head of Social Welfare, Ms. Oby Ugwumba, encouraged women to report cases of gender-based violence, child abuse and molestation.

“If you see something, say something. Do not suffer in silence.”

Representing the traditional ruler of Ojoto, His Majesty Igwe Gerald Mbamalu (Oranyelu III), High Chief Romanus Anyisia urged women to promote godly values, discourage family conflicts and raise responsible children.

Similarly, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic Oko, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, represented by her Personal Assistant, Demcute Nnoruka, called on women to remain ambassadors of peace and unity.

Meanwhile, the APGA chairmanship candidate for Idemili South, Hon. Oluchukwu Ilogbenu, sought the support of the women ahead of the forthcoming local government elections, promising an inclusive administration focused on women, youths and grassroots development.

The event attracted political leaders, traditional representatives, community stakeholders and Community Women Leaders from the seven communities in Idemili South, who gathered to honour Okonkwo as she presided over her final August Women’s Meeting as President-General of Ojoto Akanasato Women.
