Hundreds of Anambra residents are receiving life-changing medical care free of charge as the Friends of Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo commemorate the birthdays of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his wife, Dr. (Mrs.) Nonye Soludo, with a statewide medical outreach.

The initiative, which commenced at Enugu-Ukwu General Hospital, provides free fibroid surgeries, cataract operations, glaucoma screening and treatment, hernia surgeries, and other medical interventions aimed at easing the financial burden on vulnerable patients.

At Enugu-Ukwu General Hospital, women diagnosed with fibroids and ovarian cysts are undergoing free myomectomy after completing registration and medical screening.

Speaking at the launch of the exercise, the hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Dozie Udeolisa, described the programme as a “life-changing intervention” that is restoring hope to women who had long postponed surgery because of cost.

“Fibroid surgery is beyond the financial reach of many families. As a result, many women have lived with pain and complications for years. This outreach removes that financial barrier by providing quality treatment completely free of charge,” he said.

Dr. Udeolisa disclosed that Enugu-Ukwu General Hospital is one of the designated centres handling the surgeries, adding that only beneficiaries who successfully completed the screening process are being operated on.

According to him, experienced surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and other healthcare professionals have been deployed to ensure every procedure is carried out safely.

“There is no fixed duration for these surgeries because every patient’s condition is different. Our priority is to ensure each operation is conducted with the highest standard of care,” he added.

He described the turnout of beneficiaries as impressive, noting that many patients who had previously abandoned treatment due to financial constraints are now accessing life-saving procedures without paying.

Commending Governor Soludo and the Friends of the Governor for sponsoring the initiative, Dr. Udeolisa said the outreach demonstrates a strong commitment to improving healthcare delivery across Anambra State.

“This is more than a birthday celebration; it is an investment in the health and well-being of Ndi Anambra. We encourage eligible residents to take advantage of this opportunity, as the surgeries are entirely free and patients will receive quality medical care throughout the programme.”

Beyond fibroid surgeries, the medical outreach also includes free cataract surgeries as well as glaucoma screening and treatment at the State Specialist Eye Centre, Nise, while free hernia surgeries are being conducted at General Hospital, Umueri.

The outreach is expected to benefit hundreds of residents across the state, offering access to specialised healthcare services that many beneficiaries would otherwise struggle to afford.
