Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Sector Command has urged motorists to exercise greater caution and strictly observe all safety measures while driving.

The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhanuo, in a statement by Sector Public Education Officer, SRC Margaret Onabe said the advice has become necessary as the rainy season intensifies with forecasts of heavier rainfall across the country,

She advised drivers to ensure their tyres have adequate tread depth and proper traction to maintain effective grip on wet road surfaces, just as she stressed the need for their vehicles to be roadworthy before embarking on any journey.

She identified tyres as among the most critical safety components of any vehicle, as they are the only points of contact with the road.

According to Asekhanuo, driving during rainfall poses significant risks due to reduced visibility, slippery road surfaces, and other hazardous conditions that could lead to road traffic crashes if adequate precautions are not taken.

“Drivers should thoroughly clean their vehicle windows and windshields, both inside and outside; and inspect essential safety components, including headlights, brake lights, tail lights, turn signals, windscreen wipers and wiper blades to ensure they are functioning properly.

“Vehicle lights should be switched on whenever it rains, regardless of whether it is daytime or nighttime, to enhance visibility for all road users.

“It’s important motorists reduce their speed, maintain a safe following distance, and always apply the “common sense speed limit” appropriate to prevailing weather and road conditions,” she said.

To reinforce compliance with these safety measures, Asekhanuo directed all Unit Commanders across the State to intensify traffic calming operations, sustain public enlightenment campaigns and pay special attention to condition of vehicle windscreen wipers during routine patrols and enforcement activities throughout the rainy season.

While reiterating the Corps’ commitment to reducing road traffic crashes, the FRSC boss called on all road users to cooperate with the FRSC by driving responsibly and obeying all traffic regulations.

“Drive to Stay Alive,” she emphasized.
