The Mayor of Anaocha Local Government Area, Comrade Romanus Ibekwe, has emerged as the Best Performing Mayor in Primary Healthcare Delivery in Anambra State, following Anaocha’s outstanding performance in the Anambra Primary Healthcare Leadership Challenge.

The recognition was announced during the award ceremony held at the Lighthouse, Awka, where Anaocha Local Government Area was ranked first among the state’s 21 local government councils in primary healthcare delivery. The award came with a cash prize of ₦3 million.

The honour is widely seen as a validation of the significant investments and reforms implemented by the Ibekwe administration in the healthcare sector. Under his leadership, more than 23 primary healthcare centres across Anaocha were equipped with modern medical facilities and essential equipment, improving access to quality healthcare services for residents.

Stakeholders have described the award as not only a recognition of excellence in healthcare delivery but also an acknowledgement of the administration’s broader commitment to grassroots development and people-oriented governance.

Beyond healthcare, the administration recorded notable achievements in education through the distribution of learning materials and school equipment to students across communities within the local government area. The initiative was aimed at strengthening educational development and improving learning outcomes.

The administration also facilitated several infrastructure projects, including road construction and rehabilitation, erosion control measures, and the establishment of a palm oil processing factory designed to boost local economic activities and create employment opportunities.

In environmental management, the local government addressed long-standing sanitation challenges through the evacuation of refuse dumps that had remained unattended for years, contributing to cleaner and healthier communities.

As part of efforts to empower young people and promote innovation, the administration established an E-Automobile Mechanic Workshop at the Anaocha Local Government Secretariat. The facility provides skill acquisition opportunities for youths and prepares them for emerging trends in the automotive industry.

The council also renovated and furnished the Anaocha Local Government Secretariat, creating a more conducive environment for efficient service delivery and enhanced staff productivity.

Access to potable water was another major focus of the administration. More than 23 solar-powered boreholes were constructed across various communities, providing residents with sustainable sources of clean water.

The administration’s achievements have continued to attract commendation from traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups and residents, many of whom have praised its developmental strides and community-focused initiatives.

Speaking after receiving the award, Comrade Ibekwe dedicated the recognition to the people of Anaocha, healthcare workers, councillors, traditional rulers, stakeholders and members of his administration whose collective efforts contributed to the local government’s success.

He also expressed appreciation to the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, for fostering an enabling environment for grassroots development and improved healthcare delivery across the state.

According to the mayor, the award serves as a motivation to continue delivering on the administration’s mandate and ensuring that ongoing projects are completed for the benefit of the people.

With Anaocha emerging as the state’s leading local government in primary healthcare delivery, the award stands as a significant milestone in the council’s development journey and a testament to the impact of sustained investments in healthcare and community development.
