Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) has urged religious leaders and institutions to continue to speak for its members in the face barriers of discrimination, isolation and exclusion.

State Chairman, Comr. Ugochukwu Okeke stated this on Tuesday at Ifitedunu during a novelty football match between Catholic Priests of the Awka Diocese and the JONAPWD Anambra Blind Football Team.

The event was in commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, theme: “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.”

Speaking before the match, Okeke stressed the need to ensure PWDs have access to healthcare, education, employment, and participation in community life.

According to him, promoting holistic human development was necessary to strengthening the entire society.

He said, “Today’s event is not just a match; it is a statement of solidarity, a celebration of ability, and an affirmation of the dignity of every human person.

“This theme invites all of us to reflect on how far we have come in building inclusive communities—and how much further we must go.

“It challenges us to remove barriers, embrace diversity, and create a society where every individual, regardless of disability, can participate fully and equally.

“Inclusion is not charity; it is justice. Ensuring that persons with disabilities have access to healthcare, education, employment, and participation in community life strengthens the entire society.

“The Church’s involvement reinforces our collective responsibility to build a humane and equitable society.

“This is why today’s match is so symbolic. It demonstrates that disability is not inability, and that with the right support, understanding and opportunities, PWDs can excel, inspire and contribute meaningfully to society.

“Our Blind Football Team represents the resilience, courage, and talent that flourish when inclusion is embraced.”

Appreciating Diocese of Awka leadership, priests, partners and supporters for making the event possible, JONAPWD boss prayed the event marked another step toward a nation where “every person is valued, included and empowered.”
