Human rights activist and lawyer Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent visit to Anambra State as a watershed moment in the Southeast’s socio-political landscape.
The event attracted a large turnout of indigenes and residents, with many others tuning into national broadcasts to witness the occasion. Enthusiastic participation was also observed among the non-indigene population, especially those from the Southwest.
In a statement released in Awka Anambra State, Ejiofor noted that the event was energized by Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, whose palpable excitement at hosting the Commander-in-Chief set a positive tone for the visit. While some organizational gaps during the event were noted, they were overshadowed by the significance of the moment and the Governor’s vibrant reception. Political analysts interpreted President Tinubu’s warm gestures and body language as a tacit endorsement of Governor Soludo’s bid for re-election, despite no formal declaration being made.
In recent political discussions, it has become evident that opposition to Soludo’s re-election appears limited, largely due to his visible achievements in infrastructure development across the state. Many, including myself, can personally attest to these advancements; for example, the newly constructed road to my ancestral home in Oraifite has greatly improved accessibility. Governor Soludo’s transformative governance deserves commendation, and it is hard to envision any competitor disrupting this momentum in the near future.
Nevertheless, as he gears up for the upcoming electoral cycle, Governor Soludo should adopt a more inclusive approach. It is crucial to acknowledge that his mandate is derived from the people of Anambra, not from any singular political actor. No individual holds the power to determine his political future; his legitimacy rests with the electorate. Therefore, cultivating unity and building trust across all communities will be vital for consolidating public support.
Additionally, the resilience of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in ensuring political continuity in Anambra is noteworthy. As the only party that has consistently governed the state over the years, APGA has solidified its role as a unifying democratic force in the region.
Governor Soludo should also consider refining his public communication strategy. Effective political leadership necessitates tact and thoughtful rhetoric. Personal attacks, particularly against fellow Anambarians regardless of their political affiliations, could be counterproductive and undermine his goodwill. Public perception carries considerable weight in Anambra, especially when respected elders are publicly criticized. Soludo must steer clear of trivial disputes and prioritize policy-driven engagement.

Finally, a concerning issue is the indiscriminate revocation of Certificates of Occupancy (CoO) for commercial and private lands granted by previous administrations. While development necessitates space, Anambra’s landlocked geography poses significant challenges. The administration must proceed cautiously, particularly regarding CoOs that were issued under previous governments. Ongoing legal disputes over such acquisitions underscore the need for careful management. Development policies must be implemented with a humanitarian perspective, advancing progress without compromising justice or fairness.
Ejiofor further noted that President Tinubu’s visit has emphasized crucial political currents in Anambra and strategically positioned Governor Soludo.
“Sustaining this momentum will hinge on effective communication, inclusive governance, and the implementation of policies centered around the needs of the people”, he adds.
